Intelligence sleuths interrogate KU faculty members, students

Srinagar, June 08, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, intelligence sleuths have recently interrogated teachers and scholars at the Kashmir University in Srinagar for their alleged role in instigating students against the puppet regime and preaching radicalisation.

A local English daily Kashmir Reader reported that several faculty members of social sciences have been, so far, summoned by different intelligence agencies for questioning in the dean’s office. The questioning is taking place a month after sociology teacher Dr Muhammad Rafi Butt was killed by the Indian troops during a siege and search operation in Shopian, it added.

A senior faculty member of the varsity, wishing not to be named, told the daily that the intelligence agencies summoned colleagues of Dr Rafi Butt and they were put to sustained questioning for several hours. Sources in the varsity told the daily that the faculty members of sociology department were called by the dean of the faculty to her office where they were questioned for a couple of hours by intelligence officials.

“A faculty member was called to the Dean’s office and was informed that two journalists wanted to talk to him. After he resisted answering a few questions of the journalists, he was told that he will be summoned to the office again. The faculty member was later informed that the guys questioning him were intelligence sleuths,” the teacher who spoke to Kashmir Reader said.

A student of the sociology department said that on Monday, June 4, the intelligence department of the police summoned two fourth-semester students to their interrogation centre at Humhama. He said that the students were interrogated for the whole day.

Students of the sociology department, in particular, are being harassed on the pretext of being questioned about Dr Rafi Butt, he said. Last month, intelligence officials had summoned one scholar at the sociology department and questioned him for the whole day. A top source at the varsity, who is privy to the developments, told Kashmir Reader that the intelligence agencies have tightened the noose around the varsity. “There is unprecedented surveillance around and inside the university campus,” he said.

Sources told Kashmir Reader that the intelligence sleuths during questioning made offensive remarks against the faculty members and accused them of instigating students in the varsity. The intelligence agents also accused the faculty members of preaching hatred and radicalisation to the students, sources said.

Two other students were summoned to the local police station at Nigeen. A student revealed that during questioning there, the summoned students were asked questions about the congregation that the varsity students organized on May 8 in honour of Dr Rafi Butt. The Kashmir University Students Union had organised a day-long congregation in the honour of the martyred professor. It saw massive participation of students.
