Government working to ensure consumers rights, similar to the most advanced countries

Karachi: Pakistani consumers can be assured that Government is working to ensure their rights, similar to the most advanced countries this was stated by Dr. Shahzad Afzal Deputy Director General Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority PSQCA. Seminar was organized by The Consumers Eye Pakistan (TCEP) with the collaboration of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA).

On behalf of Pir Bakhsh Jamali Director General PSQCA, Dr. Shahzad Afzal in his Speech assured the participants that PSQCA as National Standards body is committed to play its multi dimensional role of enhancing the competitiveness of local industry and trade for the optimum benefits of the business group entrepreneurs, consumers and the country as a hole.

The PSQCA is committed to play its vital role of enhancing the competitiveness of industry and trade for the benefits of the business group entrepreneurs and consumers. Dr. Shahzad Afzal pledge his full support to The Consumers Eye Pakistan for their efforts regarding consumer Awareness.

Speaking as chief Guest Mr. M.A. Jabbar Senior Member Board of Director PSQCA and Ex. President Site Association said that the consumers have the right to refuse substandard products in Pakistan. Nisar Khuhro agreed, amidst a loud applause, to adapt the Consumer Protection Ordinance, which the province of Sindh still does not have.

He said “There is no doubt that we need the ordinance and I am here to assure you that I will take part on this movement to protection of consumers law must promulgate in Sindh”, he assured the organizer and the audience of Seminar on world Consumer Rights day in his speech. Mr. M.A. Jabbar further said that “Since 1986 we are still awaiting the birth of the institution competent to provide relief to the consumer”, In a society where awareness of consumer interests is still in its infancy, there is a need for regulation on part of the government and activism on the part of civil society to ensure protection of consumer rights”, he added.

Earlier in his key note welcome Address Chairman TCEP M. Umar Ghauri informed the audience that In Pakistan, consumer laws are a provincial matter and there are only three consumer protection ordinances in Islamabad, Balochistan and Punjab.

Sindh is still without a consumer protection law and consumer courts. He lauded the Services of newly appointed DG. PSQCA Mr. Pir Bakhsh Jamali for the betterment of PSQCA. He assured his full support to PSQCA.

The seminar session was also addressed by Mr. Khalid Tawab Vice President FPCCI Rehmatullah Memon Media Adviser PSQCA and Faheem Siddiqui General Secretary Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ).

Representatives from corporate sector including, Mr. Abraruddin of Naheed Superstore and Kashif Tasleem of Xenith who spoke about the consumer laws, Foods safety and Intellectual Property Rights in Pakistan. After Seminar Mr. Khalid Tawab Vice President FPCCI; presented Shield to Rehmatullah Memon Media Adviser PSQCA.

He also distributed mementos and Certificates among participant’s speakers and volunteers of The Consumers Eye Pakistan. Shields were also presented to Mr. Pir Bakhsh Jamali; Director General PSQCA by Chairman TCEP M. Umar Ghauri.

A large number of participants attended the event including officials of PSQCA, Personalities from corporate sector, social workers, members of NGO’s, personalities from civil societies and Media personals.
