Government lawyers have joint responsibility to assist public: Sindh governor

Karachi: Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan has said that both the government and the legal fraternity have joint responsibility to provide assistance to people on legal issues.

“Many of the organisations of lawyers are doing a good job and providing relief to the people,” he said while talking to a delegation of Karachi Centre for Dispute Resolution (KCDR) led by former chief justice Supreme Court Justice (r) Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui, which called on him at the Governor House on Friday.

He said that all the cases are referred to the courts for resolution because the Dispute Resolution institute has no legal cover and it has also caused burden of cases on courts.

“There is a need for resolution of cases through mediation before referring the cases to the courts as is being practiced in developed countries of the world,” he added.

Sindh governor said there is possibility that an article be introduced in the Civil Procedure Court through an amendment to a make room for option of mediation before referring the case to the court.

“This option could also prove useful particularly in cases of public related complaints against government departments,” he pointed out.

In his comments, head of KCDR Justice (r) Siddiqui said that their Centre is providing relief and facilitating the people to resolve their cases through mediation before referring the cases to the courts.

“Dispute Resolution mechanism is also lessening the burden on the courts,” he added.

Former Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan, Justice (r) Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan Sherwani, Principal Secretary Mumtazur Rehman and Secretary Law Ghulam Nabi Shah were also present during the meeting.
