Government allocates over Rs.1 billion to execute initiatives proposed by Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority

Lahore, September 09, 2014 (PPI-OT): The government has allocated over Rs.1 billion to execute the initiatives proposed by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) in its five year SME development. It was disclosed by Mr. Muhammad Alamgir Chaudhry, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Authority at a meeting with Mr. Kashif Anwar, Vice President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), who visited SMEDA today along with a seven member delegation of his chamber. Mr. Hassanien Javed, Provincial Chief SMEDA-Punjab, Mr. Liaqat Ali Gohar, DGM-Admin. and PR and Mr. Meer Anwar, Manager e-BDS also attended the meeting.

Mr. Alamgir Chaudhry informed that to formulate the five SME Development Plan, SMEDA had to conduct 870 meetings with SME sector’s stakeholders. The meetings undertook value chain analysis of 13 sectors, which include Food and Agriculture, Logistic, Gems and Jewellery, Information Technology and Allied Services, Construction, Light Engineering, Energy, Leather, Mineral, Tourism and Textile, he said adding that the analysis helped develop a plan comprising 76 interventions for rapid growth of the SME sector.

SMEDA Acting Chief told that a presentation on SMEDA’s five year SME Development Plan was also given to the Planning Commission, who have not only allocated a fund of Rs. 1 billion for implementation of the proposed initiatives, but also mad the plan a part of the Prime Minister’s vision 2020.

LCCI VP Mr. Kashif Anwar appreciated SMEDA’s endeavours to promote the cause of SME development in Pakistan and evinced special interest in the emerging role of Information Technology for marketing of the SME sector in the national and international market.

A presentation regarding creation of a cyber based SME Club was also given to the LCCI VP on this occasion. The LCCI VP assured to extend the fullest cooperation of his chamber to make the SME Club a success. He hoped that the initiative would provide the SMEs with a swift and effective solution to their marketing problem at national as well as international level.
