Food & Agriculture Organization estimates marginal rise in Asia’s paddy production in 2011

Karachi: Asia’s paddy production is likely to augment by 3% to a record 646.2 million tonnes in 2011 on the back of recovery in India and Pakistan, according to a latest release from the UN Food & Agriculture Organization FAO. FAO estimated that Asia had produced around 627.7 million tonnes of paddy in the year-ago period. Paddy production in India is expected to rise by 8 per cent to 154.5 million tonnes in 2011 from 143 million tonnes in year-ago period. In Pakistan, the output is pegged to increase by 35 per cent to 9.7 million tonnes from 7.2 million tonnes in the same period.
