First ever Water Management Policy is in final stages: Minister for Water and Power

Islamabad, August 26, 2015 (PPI-OT):Minister for Water and Power, Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said that the government is in the process for the formulation of first ever water management policy in the country and the Parliament is deliberating upon its various aspects. The Minister was talking to a delegation of delegation of Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial and Research Organization (CSIRO) lead by Ms. Margaret Adamson, High commissioner of Australia which called on here today.

The Minister appraised the delegation that Pakistan is also facing impacts of global climate change which is affecting the precious water resources of the country alarmingly. He urged taking of effective measures so that impacts of global warning and climate change could be minimized in the. The Minister highlighted that the Government is fully aware of the sensitivity of the issue and has been actively pursuing policies and legislation along with on ground practical steps for preservation and better management of water resources.

The Minister emphasized on greater sensitization of the society on the issues relating to water resources. He called for effective awareness campaign through media, seminars, public walks and though curriculum modification even in the education institutions the about the importance of water management. Areas of mutual interest particularly in the field of water management’s cooperation and power sector development also came under discussion.

The Minister noted that Pakistan and Australia have enjoyed close and cordial relations. He said that Pakistan is desirous of getting maximum benefits from the Australian experiences especially in water managements and energy sector developments. The Australian Higher commissioner agreed that bilateral agreement and subsidiary arrangement might be materialized for the better working relationship between the two countries to redress the issue of water depleting in the Pakistan. In the meeting senior officials of the Ministry of Water and Power, EAD, WAPDA and the representatives of irrigations departments of the provinces were also present.
