Diamer- Basha Dam, largest project in country’s history is major breakthrough in water resource development

Lahore: Initiation of work on Diamer- Basha Dam, largest project in history of Pakistan, is major breakthrough in water resource development in the country, says Water & Power Development Authority WAPDA Member Water Syed Raghib Abbas Shah.

Talking to delegation of Pakistan Air Force PAF War College, he said project will store 8.1 million acre feet MAF water to supplement irrigation supplies, generate 4500MW low-cost hydel electricity. Some other mega projects now in various stages of implementation are 7100MW Bunji, 1410MW Tarbela 4th Extension, 4500MW Dasu, 740MW Munda Hydropower Project. A program of constructing small, medium-sized dams in all four provinces is underway for socio-economic uplift of backward areas.

Another 20 million acres virgin land can be cultivated subject to water availability. Five hydropower projects with cumulative generation capacity of 400MW will start contributing to National Grid by 2012.
