Consensus on Kalabagh dam would be greater achievement than Liquefied Natural Gas import: Shahid Rasheed Butt

Islamabad, February 14, 2016 (PPI-OT): Patron Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders Shahid Rasheed Butt on Sunday asked the government to try to forge consensus on Kalabagh dam (KBD) which would be an achievement bigger than the recent LNG deal. Renewed efforts aimed at unanimity among stakeholders over this issue will settle fears of flood, food security, water scarcity and energy crisis, he said.

Shahid Rasheed Butt said that government should educate masses about the misconception that KBD will increase problems as dams are built to tackle problems. He said that KBD will irrigate 6.1 million acre of land boosting agricultural production which will help country earn foreign exchange through exports.

Sindh will get additional 2.257 acre foot of water with no negative impact in Indus delta; he said adding that it will add 3600 megawatt electricity in the system paving way for national development. Butt said that KBG will submerge more area in Punjab than Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and displace more people but there is no opposition to it there.

He said that India continue to steal Pakistan’s water, glaciers stretched over 13680 kilometre are melting, deforestation continues while ground water level continue to drop which can make Pakistan a desert. Country cannot survive without water therefore politicians should shun differences over this human and technical issue which has been made most controversial project in the history of Pakistan, he said.
