Chairman, SITE Association hails decision of European Parliament granting of GSP + status to Pakistan

Karachi, December 13, 2013 (PPI-OT): Chairman, S.I.T.E. Association of Industry, Mr. Younus M. Bashir in a press statement hailed the decision of European Parliament granting of GSP + status to Pakistan with a majority vote, said that he and Industrialists of SITE are overwhelmed by the outcome of the voting took place in the European Parliament wherein motion not granting GSP+ status to 10 Countries including Pakistan was outvoted by 409 to 182 votes.

He said this is a great success of Pakistan and Prime Minister, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, as well as hectic efforts of Finance Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Governor Punjab, Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and all concerned officials needs to be congratulated and thanked for properly lobbying the case at right forum and with various Governments of European Union for the award of GSP + status to Pakistan which shows confidence of the global markets on the excellent quality of Pakistani Products.

Mr. Zubair Motiwala, Former Chairman S.I.T.E. Association of Industry also congratulated the Government for getting GSP + status from the European Union Parliament and hoped that the government would facilitate the export oriented industry to fulfil all the foreign orders.

He also drew attention of Prime Minister towards pathetic condition of infrastructure availability to Textile Sector, today even installed capacity utilization is not possible to produce goods of more than 1 billion US $ would require, capacity utilization at the optimum level plus expansion in capacities and this is not possible without creating more resources for creating infrastructure, he said there can be various ways to this, special economic zones with these facilities available can be a way forward, there can be many other steps which are required to be taken.

He suggested that the Government should prepare a comprehensive strategy for the textile sector to ensure that the country benefits from the grant of GSP + status which is most essential under the given circumstances.

He suggested promoting self sustainable special economic zone for the purpose of producing exportable commodities on 24 hours basis. He said that this kind of zone approved very successful, where a developer develops an area and produce its own energy requirements plus effluent treatment plant implementation of ILO and other social complaint requirements.

This would definitely be a recipe for success. He further said that grant of GSP + Status is not only about enhancement in export from Pakistan but it is a recognition by the International Community of the compliance of 27 different obligations and that will definitely create a goodwill image of Pakistan and will also create huge numbers of jobs which would take care of law and order and security related issues.

He said he is sure that we can and we will enhance our exports, which can create more jobs, encourage foreign investors to put their money in new ventures in Pakistan. Move foreign exchange for the country.

He meanwhile, urged the government to ensure uninterrupted supply of gas, electricity and other needed facilities to the industry to fulfil foreign orders after implementation of the GSP + Status from 1st January 2013.

Mr. Ahsan Arshad Ayub, Sr. Vice Chairman welcomed the European Parliament decision to grant duty free market access to Pakistan’s more than 600 items mainly textile items entering into 27 members EU countries would help give considerable boost to exports and create new jobs in the country.

He said that due to this status Pakistan would get opportunity to overcome the losses occurred during the previous years. He said Pakistani business community has huge potential for multiplying the country’s current exports, he also seek Government’s attention to improve the law and order and take care of energy crisis so that a conducive atmosphere is available to compete the global market.
