Chairman Pakistan Tannery Association deplores inordinate delay in completion of water supply pipeline by Karachi Water Sewerage Board in Korangi Industrial Area

Karachi, May 24, 2013 (PPI-OT): The Chairman Pakistan Tannery Association (S.Z) Mr. Amanullah Aftab has deplored inordinate delay in completion of water supply pipeline by KW and SB in Tannery Zone, Korangi Industrial Area. Aftab said that the laying of pipeline was executed earlier last year as Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan had sanctioned an amount of Rs38.5 million and the amount was released to the KWSB immediately in order to install pipeline for the export-oriented leather industry of Pakistan. He said that the KWSB contractor had started the work but even after the period of over one year the work is yet to be completed while the industry is suffering badly due to scarce water.

PTA chief said that the water pipeline was meant o restore water supply to the water starved Tannery Zone, which he regretted was not getting it for last one decade and KWSB did absolutely nothing to help the water intensive tanning industry leaving it to depend on substandard underground water and through tanker supply.

He said that the Governor of Sindh came to the rescue of the largest national cluster of leather industry on PTA (S.Z) request and approved funds from his special funds for the above project, in a meeting in April 2012 at Governor House.

Over a year has now passed but KW and SB failed to complete the project despite repeated PTA (S.Z) requests for expediting the work which is now suspended since early January 2013 without any intimation whatsoever, to PTA (S.Z) being the stakeholder in the project.

He slammed KW and SB for its negligence and despite receiving all the required funds the project has remained suspended. He said that the national cluster of tanneries and made-up units of leather which contributes over 35 per cent of foreign exchange earnings of national leather industry and is a source of livelihood for thousands of people.

He appealed to the Governor Sindh to intervene and help to get rightful water share of this industry. He further asked the MD KWSB Misbahuddin Farid to order to resume work on the project immediately.
