Bio Technology can help enhance Agro productivity

LAHORE: Bio-technology has emerged as the strategic pillar industry of the 21st century which can efficiently enhance agro-productivity. Its use in research and development is also very useful as Pakistan needs varied crops which use less amount of water and give more yields to feed the rising number of population.

This was stated by Minister Agriculture Punjab Malik Ahmad Ali while speaking at a seminar on Bio-tech R&D and Technology Upgradation at Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry here Tuesday.

Research scientists, academia, faculty members from the universities, entrepreneurs and LCC&I members attended the seminar.

Minister Agriculture said that Punjab government is fully patronizing research institutes to promote bio technology and research culture in the province and sufficient funds have been provided to Punjab Agriculture Research Board and Ayub Agriculture Research Institute.

He further said that Punjab Seed Council has approved 52 new varieties of different important crops while Agriculture Research Board has so far approved one billion rupees for 53 projects of research.

Malik Ahmad Ali told that in order to enhance productivity of crops, Agriculture Department Punjab has introduced various new initiatives like tunnel technology, green tractor scheme and drip irrigation system. The Minister Agriculture further told that in order to cure cotton leaf curl virus, efforts are being made.
