Arab League chief: Peace cannot be achieved without establishing independent Palestinian state

Cairo (IINA) Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit met here on Wednesday with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Envoy for the Middle East and North Africa Mikhail Bogdanov.

The Arab League said in a statement that the Russian envoy reviewed his country’s stands on the overall regional developments, especially with regard to the Geneva IV conference on Syria.

Aboul Gheit expressed the hope that these talks would lead to a deal to end the six-year-old Syrian conflict. He praised Russia’s role in consolidating the ceasefire in Syria during the “Astana talks”, held in January and February, underlining the need to end the humanitarian suffering of the Syrian people.

Also, the Arab League chief discussed the Palestinian cause with the Russian envoy, stressing that any attempts to circumvent the two-state solution are deemed a waste of time. He said that the Arab countries accept the two-state solution as the only formula to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The secretary general added that the Arab Peace Initiative (API) remains a basis of the Arab position.
