APL ramps up operations from Oman Sohar container terminal to UAE, Pakistan

Karachi: Global shipping line APL is leveraging Sohar Port’s strategic geographical location outside Strait of Hormuz, as well as its deepwater capabilities, to enhance connectivity between Oman and rest of the world. Container shipping giant launched its Pakistan Middle East Express (PMX) & Subcontinents Red Sea Express (SRX) services providing direct linkages between Sohar Port’s Oman International Container Terminal (OICT) and markets of Indo-Pak subcontinent & Red Sea.

MV APL Brisbane made its maiden call at OICT as part of new unveiled PMX service that connects Sohar with Fujairah & Jebel Ali in UAE with Karachi in Pakistan. Rollout of three new services underlines efforts by Singapore based global shipping line to position itself as key player from OICT seen as recognition of Oman’s growing strategic importance particularly as a time of heightening international tension over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

For Omani shippers, traders, new services provide speedy direct connectivity with high growth markets of Pakistan, India & Red Sea without need for transhipment via a neighbouring port in the region. Container traffic throughput at OICT is expected to burgeon in line with Oman government’s directive calling for conversion of Muscat’s Port Sultan Qaboos into a maritime tourism facility and for relocation of all commercial traffic to Sohar.
