IoT solution enabled by Gemalto helps optimize safety and efficiency in Latin America’s busiest seaports

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, June 25, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, is enabling M2M connectivity for an innovative Internet-of-Things (IoT) solution that monitors dynamic ocean conditions to optimize safety and efficiency in Brazilian ports. Developed by HidroMares a leading oceanography consulting firm, the real time weather-oceanographic information system (SISMO(R)) monitors waves, currents, water depth, temperature and salinity to improve navigation safety, streamline ship traffic and increase port productivity.

The innovative SISMO(R) telemetry system leverages robust modems by Duodigit, a provider of telemetry and biometrics technology products, to collect various ocean data from sensors deployed on buoys, piers and the seabed in ports. The modems use Gemalto Cinterion M2M Modules with embedded Java to process and send data via wireless networks and the Internet to a backend server. Port workers sign on securely to an intuitive interface and use the data to improve real time decision-making and optimize port productivity. The solution is already deployed in Porto of Acu in Rio de Janeiro state, whose location near Campos Basin is strategic to the petrol industry.

“Sampling of oceanographic data is done in extremely hostile environments requiring rugged durability of system components during installation and maintenance. The transmission of real time data demands a robust system that is reliable continuously in all conditions, 365 days a year,” says Alexandre De Caroli, Technical Director of HidroMares. “Duodigit and Gemalto collaborated to provide a solution that meets these needs.”

“One of our biggest challenges was designing a cost efficient solution that could ensure reliable communication in the extreme environments of a seaport,” said Luiz Henrique Correa Bernardes, Technical Director, Duodigit. “Gemalto’s Java embedded module provides the required durability along with the processing power needed to analyze and store information locally in the device. The solution allows efficient communication as needed, which is critical for cost efficiency and preserving battery power in hard-to-service locations such as seaports.”

“Optimizing supply chain logistics and improving productivity in distribution systems is key to the profitability of our increasingly global economy and it also improves fuel economy for positive environmental impact,” added Rodrigo Serna, President for Latin America at Gemalto. “Solutions such as those provided by HidroMares and Duodigit will be leading Brazil and Latin America forward and helping to increase the efficiency of seaport logistics.”

At INTERPOL World 2015, Gemalto brings next-generation border and visa management to enhance global security

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, April 9, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, demonstrates at INTERPOL World 2015 how its next-generation border and visa management solutions can enable immigration authorities to handle huge volume of travelers, with enhanced security and efficiency.

With a massive surge in the number of travelers worldwide, government and law enforcement agencies are facing significant challenges in securing their nations. Cross-border crimes are on the rise, while passengers are demanding speed and convenience at countries’ checkpoints. A coordinated approach that integrates best-practice immigration processes with the state-of-the-art technologies, is therefore needed to improve global security and prevent identity fraud.

Guests to the Gemalto stand at INTERPOL World 2015 will experience:

TheCoesys Border Management – an end-to-end solution, which integrates high-availability service platforms, secure software, and on-site services for easy deployment of immigration policies. It enables authorities to process inbound and outbound passengers at air, land and sea points of entry through automated document verification. It also allows them to coordinate their tasks with local and international agencies in real time, and securely manage all documents and procedures from a central post.

The Coesys Automated Border Control – the automated eGates, which combine the latest technologies in electronic gate hardware and border control software to provide expedited immigration clearance. It is a highly secure two-stage verification system that first validates the authenticity of the ePassport, and then performs facial or fingerprint recognition to match the person to the data stored on the ePassport.

Electronic Travel Documents – the ICAO compliant Sealys ePassports, which are embedded with an integrated microprocessor containing traveler’s information such as picture, data, and fingerprint. These ePassports feature multiple layers of security and allow seamless crossings at manual or automated kiosks. From Korea to Sweden, from the United States to Singapore, Gemalto is the trusted partner for more than 30 ePassport programs around the world.

Coesys Visa Management – a full suite of service-oriented applications, which are designed tosecurely manage visa applications, issuance, and resident permits. These applications are used at embassies, consulates, and other locations such as visa-on-arrival.
